đŸ§” Size guide: how to choose the right size and measure your baby?

You've found the perfect baby PDF pattern, but one question always comes up: which size to choose? Your baby wears 6-month clothes from the store, but does that correspond to a 6-month sewing pattern size? And how do you take their measurements correctly?

This complete baby size guide will help you:

  • understand the differences between commercial sizes and PDF patterns,
  • learn how to take accurate baby measurements,
  • choose the ideal size for the pattern.

đŸ‘¶ Why is the size guide so important in sewing?

Unlike commercial clothing (often standardized or stretchable), sewing patterns are precise and don't all "fit" the same way.
That's why it's essential to rely on the measurement chart provided with each pattern, and not on the age indicated.

đŸȘĄ At Lydie.E, each PDF pattern comes with a size guide, designed for the comfort and real morphology of babies (from 3 to 36 months).

📏 The 4 essential measurements to take for a baby

Take your baby's measurements with a flexible tape measure, without pulling too tight, and ideally in a bodysuit or underwear.

  1. Chest circumference
→ Pass the tape measure under the armpits, at the widest part of the rib cage.
  2. Abdominal circumference
    → At the belly button.
  3. Hip circumference
→ Pass the tape measure around the widest part of the buttocks, with a diaper on.
  4. Stature (height)
→ Lay the baby straight on their back, and measure from head to heels.

✹ Practical tip: always note measurements in centimeters and keep them in a notebook or note for your future sewing projects.

📐 How to use a baby size chart in sewing?

Each pattern offers a measurement chart with several sizes (from 3 months to 36 months for my baby patterns).

Here's how to use it correctly:

  • Identify your child's actual measurements.
  • Compare them to the chart provided with the pattern.
  • The measurement to consider is specified on each pattern.

💡 Do not choose by the age indicated, but by the measurements. A 10-month-old baby might very well wear a 6-month size... or 18-month size depending on their build!

✂ What to do if the baby is between two sizes?

Here are my tips depending on the type of garment sewn (you'll find these personalized tips in each pattern):

For a top → choose the size corresponding to the chest circumference, and shorten or lengthen a little if necessary.

For bottoms → take the size corresponding to the waist or hips, and adjust the length of the elastic.

At Lydie.E, models are designed with a comfort margin adapted for babies: neither too tight, nor too loose.

đŸ§” In summary: how to choose the right size for a baby sewing pattern?

✔ Don't rely on the size indicated in months.
✔ Take the baby's actual measurements (chest, waist, hips, stature).
✔ Compare them to the chart provided with the pattern.
✔ Adjust length or elastic if needed.
✔ Prioritize comfort and freedom of movement.
