My tutorial ... the bamboo sleeping bag zipper

Discover how to install the zipper on the bamboo sleeping bag.

NB: The sleeping bag pattern is no longer available for sale

The "bamboo" sleeping bag can be closed on the side in two ways: with a button placket or with a zipper.

I will explain the latter method here to complement the step-by-step instructions provided with the pattern:

Start by opening the zipper.
Place it on the right side of the front of the sleeping bag made of main fabric, at point Z indicated on the pattern.

The outer side of the zipper against the right side of the sleeping bag, the zipper teeth are against the front, facing the inside of the sleeping bag.
Attach the zipper for 3/4 of its height, then pull up the slider and finish the seam up to the bottom stop of the zipper.
Place the padded lining of the front on the front of the sleeping bag, right sides together.

 

Sew over the seam made previously.

As for the first seam, open the zipper, sew 3/4 of the height then pull up the slider and finish the seam up to the bottom stop of the zipper.
The zipper is thus "caught" between the two layers.

Attach the second side of the zipper to the left side of the back of the sleeping bag in the same way.

Closing the bottom of the sleeping bag

Place the front of the sleeping bag in main fabric against the back in main fabric, right sides together.

Assemble the bottom and the left side of the sleeping bag.
I recommend starting this seam about 1 cm from the bottom of the zipper, sewing all around then resuming the seam at its beginning and going up towards the bottom stop of the zipper.

Assemble the padded lining of the front of the sleeping bag and the padded lining of the back in the same way, right sides together, leaving an opening of about 20 cm at the bottom of the sleeping bag.

Final assembly of the sleeping bag

Place the front of the sleeping bag in main fabric against the front of the padded lining, right sides together.
Align the top of the pieces and pin them.
Place the back of the sleeping bag and its padded lining in the same way, right sides together.
Sew all along the top of the sleeping bag.

Reduce seams to 5mm by notching the edges.
Trim corners and make slits at the necklines to create a nice curve.
Turn right side out and tuck the main fabric sleeping bag into the lining through the opening and press.
